Our Story

First came man,

then came van,

then came Moroccan Lamb....

From humble beginnings on a street food van in Altrincham, back in the days when street food wasn't even a cool thing, the Moroccan lamb pita was born.

Simon had spent the past few restless years as an engineering consultant based in Altrincham. Sat at his desk staring out of the window, half focusing on his job while dreaming about what he'd rather be doing, his life reached tipping point. "I'm being successful as an engineer climbing the ranks with a good wage through only focusing 60% of my time on my job", he thought. "What if I were to leave and focus 100% of my time on something I really want to do, it's got to work!".

So that's what he did.

Seeing a gap in the market - back then Altrincham definitely wasn't the foodie capital it is now - he'd done his research every lunchtime for the past 3 years in Alty searching for something half decent to eat and never finding that elusive crispy skinned jacket potato. With financial backing from a close friend, the Pitta Crepe food van was launched. Really it was just a collection of recipes that reflected his own taste of what he'd love to eat for lunch every day. Moroccan lamb, chicken tikka, falafel - food of the gods!

It was a long hard slog building the business, with a lot of sweat and tears, but he never looked back. Altrincham was at it's lowest ebb with the highest rate of vacant units in the whole of England. Several different independent groups had formed, all with their own ideas arguing about the best strategy to drag Altrincham out of its depression. The eternal optimist lay low, kept his head down, grafting hard, continually tweaking and perfecting the recipes that would eventually bring long term success.

Legend is unsure exactly when Ali joined. Some say he had always been hiding in one of the fridges on the van. He started washing up dishes on a Saturday afternoon and in a very short space of time he had taken over and was running the show. He kicked Simon off the van, and ever since then everybody thinks he's the boss. He probably is really.

After a couple of years spent establishing Altrincham's original Mexican burritos joint, Simon went back to his roots and re-branded the van concept taking it to bricks and mortar and Pita Box was born.
